12 step

gambling America is synonymous with abundance and choices. Out of our abundance however, has evolved a culture of excessiveness, and human beings tend, by their very nature to be excessive in the pursuit of pleasurable experiences.

Chemical dependency, eating disorders and pathological gambling are all illnesses characterized by once pleasurable pursuits gone wild.

At Rimrock Foundation, these disorders are termed sick-love relationships. They occur whenever the love and pursuit of a chemical high, an eating binge or a winning high becomes more compelling than the pursuit and nurturing of our love relationships with the people once dearest to us — spouse, parents, children or friends. When we choose to obtain our rewards and pleasures from chemicals, food or games, we have become victims of addiction.

We need help: everyone around us sees our need for help, but we are blind to the reality of our condition, and our blindness to the problem becomes the problem. This blindness is called delusion and without aggressive intervention and treatment, our delusion destroys us because these illnesses are progressive and too often fatal.

Our families need help as desperately as we do. Falsely believing they can rescue us, they struggle to control and change our sick behavior.

Their struggle becomes co-dependency, a parallel sick-love relationship.

Unlike other primarily physical disorders, such as cancer and heart disease, a doctor or medical team cannot perform surgery, prescribe drugs and effect recovery for the patient with an addiction. Treatment and recovery require the active participation of the patient and a total commitment to personal change. The Foundation's unique treatment program, our trained, caring staff and your peers in the treatment program will teach you vital new information, within our therapeutic learning environment. You will be introduced to healthy coping skills and the 12 Step Recovery Program.

The rest is up to you. You can choose to use the new information to change your life to recovery and freedom, or you may choose not to change. But once exposed to new understanding, most of our patients choose recovery.

Our goal is to teach you all about your illness, and about you as a person with the illness. Then we can help you make an informed, knowledgeable choice about the course you want your life to take. Your life can be better because of your stay here. We certainly know, because we see the results every day and we grow right along with our patients.
